If you have never experienced driving a car in earthquake, you can not imagine that you will feel like as if the tires were punctured and you were not able to drive because you could not control the steering wheel. Under this circumstance, how to handle? In fact, many drivers lost their life under such helpless condition. However, in many cases, there are ways out by doing self-rescue, as follows -

1) Pull the car aside immediately and stop

In case you are driving in city road and there is no open space to evade, you should slow the vehicle down immediately, pull it aside, switch on hazard warning lights and wait till the earthquake is over.

Please be noted that you need to leave the crossroads and stop the roadside so as to facilitate people to evade and rescue vehicle to pass.

In the process of earthquake, no traffic will be allowed in most of downtown area, so you need to listen to the radio broadcast and obey police instruction.

When evacuation is required, close the vehicle doors, leave the key on the door, do not lock it and evacuate along with the local people.

2) Shelter between 2 cars at a parking lot

In case you are in the car at a park lot when earthquake has happened and there are high-rise buildings around, get out of the car at once, squat on heels between 2 cars stretching your arms around your head. By doing so, the space shaded by 2 cars will save your life. A lot of people died in the car because the car was crushed from the top.

3) Leave far away from bridge, embankment and tunnel

During the earthquake, do not drive onto a bridge, embankment or into a tunnel because those are much more dangerous sites than ordinary roads, which are subject to deformation and collapse.

4) Park the car wisely to avoid crush by collapsed building

After the earthquake, to park you car away from trees, fences, walls, low buildings and utility poles so as to avoid crush.
 

5) Take care of the changes in road condition after earthquake

There will be cracks or bumps on the road surface, so cautions must be taken when you are driving on such a road and fast driving is prohibited.

6) Abandon the car at a critical time

In case you car is stuck in a pit resulted from the earthquake, you have to abandon the car without delay and find a safer place to stay. Remember the value of life is dear than a car.

7) Don't wear high-heel shoes when driving

It will do you no any good if you are driving with high-heel shoes. Place a pair of spare shoes which are durable, such as sport shoes or flat heel cotton shoes etc. for emergent use. Never use slippers or sandals. Again, high-heel shoes are absolutely prohibited.

8) Handle the emergency properly

During the earthquake, roads and bridges will be damaged, like the massive earthquake in the mountainous area of Wen-chuan, Si-chuan province, where landslide was drastic.
