Public Protection Measures in Nuclear Radiation Incidents
Nuclear radiation incidents refer to such incidents that the out-of-control nuclear devices or other radioactive sources cause or might cause abnormal radioactive irradiation. Those that can cause harms to humans mainly refer to that nuclear reactors cause major incidents, resulting in large quantities of radioactive materials leaked into the environment. Shanghai is an area near the nuclear power stations, and shall make preparations for taking public protection measures once nuclear radiation incidents occur to the nuclear power stations.
When large quantities of radioactive materials leak from the nuclear power station, following public protection measures shall be taken: First, sheltering in safe places. Inform the residents to close all doors and windows and stay at home and do not go out. Second, monitor foods and drinking water. Strengthen radioactive materials monitoring in foods and drinking water, once the pollution exceeds set standards, the foods and drinking water will not be able to be edible. Third, apply stable iodine as appropriate. If necessary, arrange the residents to apply stable iodine. However, for those areas 10 or more kilometers away from the nuclear power stations, there is generally no need to arrange evacuations of the residents even if large quantities of radioactive materials leak from the nuclear power station.
